[Football] Mideast League takes battle of Crossovers in Week 4

Madonna scored a program-record 37 points to force overtime, but in the extra session Missouri Baptist would deny the Crusaders their first win of the season by taking their second consecutive overtime victory, 44-37.

A high-scoring start saw the Spartans (2-1) score on each of their four first-quarter drives, but Madonna posted a pair of TDs themselves to stay in the game and making it a 24-14 game by the end of the opening period.

Another Crusader TD in the second quarter followed by three straight field goals from William Stoyano gave Madonna a 29-24 edge going into the fourth quarter. Missouri Baptist would battle back, behind Darius Morrison’s third TD of the game and a game-tying TD pass from Ashton Strother to Gavin Claud with less than six minutes remaining in regulation.

On 3rd and 3 in overtime, Strother found Kameron Sloan for an 18-yard TD to give the Spartans the lead. As the Crusaders (0-3) looked to even the score, sacks by Jeremiah Austin and Rakweon Ramsey pushed the Madonna offense back and secured the win.

Strother finished the game with 318 passing yards, completing 25 of 35 pass attempts for two TDs. Sloan and Claud each recorded over 100 receiving yards, collecting 129 and 122 respectively. On the other side of the ball, Ramsey led the MBU defense with 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, and four sacks.

Arthur Brantley IV registered 259 passing yards for Madonna, throwing four TDs, and was also the team’s leading rusher with 51 yards on 24 carries. Novell Chestnut made four catches for 141 yards and a TD. Dalen Cobb and Jakel Davis each had ten tackles to lead the Crusader defense, while Cortland Cochran and Jesse Morris each had interceptions.
