NAIA Release

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Cumberlands’ (Ky.) Jahmal Hutsell was named the NAIA Football Special Teams Player of the Week while teammate Malik Thornton earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, the NAIA announced Monday.

The honors come after being named MSC Football Players of the Week earlier today.

Hutsell ran a kick back 88 yards for a touchdown in the victory over Georgetown. It was the Patriots first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2015. Hutsell earns national weekly honors for first time this season and in his career.

Thornton had two interceptions and two tackles in the Patriots’ 24-23 upset over No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.). His first interception came at the end of the third quarter and set up a Cumberlands field goal after the return.

Thornton’s second interception he retuned 74 yards for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 24-23 lead. He earns national weekly honors for the first this season and in his career.
